2014 Focus ST. 2800 miles. Check engine light appeared this morning when I turned on the ignition. Has anyone had this issue? I am asking here first because I can't get it to the shop until this weekend.

If you have a spare 10 minutes, stop by an Auto Zone and get the code read. Probably nothing big.

That was my first thought by instinct. No gas cap on ST :(

And buy a code reader while you're there.

Gas cap?
Joking aside, it's very likely something common and/or related to the cold.

CEL can pop up for about a billion different reasons. Your gas cap may not be tight, or your coolant and oil are currently mixing into a deadly concoction. Your choice.
or you can just stop by most most auto parts stores and have them read your code for free.

Drive to autozone/advance/quaker state/etc. and get the code read for free. That will point you in the right direction. Make sure you request that they do not clear the code so the dealership can read it later.
Since it's still under warranty, definitely take it to the dealership and get it checked out. Nothing should break this early!
And note that it could be something as simple as a loose gas cap.

Take it to Autozone or similar place. They can scan for trouble codes.

Get the torque app for your phone:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/det…
You can pick up the obd-II reader on ebay for 15 bucks.

You might be able to read the stored OBD codes by cycling the ignition key on-off-on-off-on and watch the odometer display.
Alternatively, you could fin d a friend with either 1) Torque app on their phone with a bluetooth J1850 dongle, or 2) a generic code scanner tool and check the codes.
If you visit Advance Auto Parts or Pep Boys or AutoZone nearby, they might check OBD codes for you as well...
Then you can reference the generic OBD codes here:
http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/
and some Ford specific OBD codes here:

And this is why the CEL is a tool of the devil. It can mean any of dozens of things, from a slight misfire in a cylinder to a leaky gas cap to a defective O2 sensor. It's usually not something terminal so don't panic. Yet.

How cold is it by you? If it's as blistering cold as it is where I am (Chicago), that might be causing it. Give it a day or two, a warm-up, and see if it persists. If it does, take it into the dealer.

You can't tell if you don't have the code read out.
When my CEL lit up once in the morning, a marten had chewed the connection cable to an O2 sensor at night. Nothing bad. I replaced the cable and everything was fine. Just needed the code to know.

It's on the majority of Ford starting about 3-4 years ago, they have phased out the gas cap.
He wasn't kidding when he said no gas cap LOL.

My dad bought a Fusion a couple of years ago. This must have confused the hell out of him. He and technology don't mix.

I'll be visiting him in March. I'll have a look. It's probably sitting in front of his house, out of gas.

Stop by an Auto Zone or similar on your way home and have them find out what it is. Might be a simple fix. Alternative: put a piece of electrical tape over the area of the light and drive obliviously.

There's a code for vermin chewing thru cables? Wow...cars are getting mighty sophisticated :)
Apollon
> Slave2anMG
01/07/2014 at 02:48 | 0 |
Not really :)
CEL coming up three times in a row (after deleting all codes) because of O2 sensor failure justified checking the cables first, and the cause was found quickly.
If my car could detect vermin, it should be able to catch it and let it out on a place where it doesn't get near parked cars again.

Well I've confirmed it was available for the 2010 Model Year, not sure if it was standard or optional though.

With the cold weather, a lot of these have been popping up. Noticed something on a co-worker's car when I was out smoking a minute ago which I'd never really considered before. He backs into parking spaces. His exhaust exits out the back of his truck. His exhaust has a nice plug of snow in it where he obviously backed it into a snowbank. Given that there isn't a corresponding snowbank behind his truck at the moment, either that snow is stuck in there really well, or he's got an upstream exhaust leak big enough to not cause issues like stalling and/or CEL. But... if you don't have a leak, I can see it causing a CEL. Presumably your exhaust should heat up enough to melt that snow and expel the plug, suddenly nothing is wrong. Might be something to have a look at if you've backed into any snowbanks recently.
